[1]A Thanksgiving Day editorial(社论)in the newspaper told of a school teacher who asked her class of first graders to draw a picture of something they were thankful for. She thought of how little these children from poor neighborhoods actually had to be thankful for. But she knew that most of them would draw pictures of turkeys or tables with food. The teacher was taken aback(吃惊;惊讶)with the picture Douglas handed in… a smile childishly drawn hand. [2]But whose hand? The class was captivated(迷惑;困惑)by the abstract(抽象的)image. “I think it must be the hand of God that brings us food,” said one child. “A farmer,” said another, “because he grows the turkeys.” Finally when the others were at work, the teacher bent(弯腰;屈身)over Douglas’s desk and asked whose hand it was. “It’s your hand, Teacher,” he mumbled(咕哝;含糊地说). [3]She recalled that frequently at recess(课间休息)she had taken Douglas, a scrubby(身材矮小的)forlorn(孤独的)child by the hand. She often did that with the children. But it meant so much to Douglas. Perhaps this was everyone’s Thanksgiving, not for the material things given to us but for the chance, in whatever small way, to give to others.

Permission to Fail 孰能无过 Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a necessary part of the learning process. But all too often as parents and teachers we deny this same right to our children. We tell them that failure is something to be ashamed of, that nothing but top performance will meet with our approval. When I see a child subject to this kind of pressure, I think of Donnie, my youngest third-grader,he was a shy, nervous perfectionist. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games that other children played with joyous abandon. He seldom answered questions — he might be wrong. Written assignments, especially math, reduced him to nail-biting frustration. He seldom finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to be sure he hadn't made a mistake. I tried my best to build his self-confidence. But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included, adored her. But even enthusiastic, loving Mary was baffled by this little boy who feared of making mistake. Then one morning we were working math problems at the blackboard. Donnie had copied the problems with painstaking neatness and filled in answers for the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left the children with Mary Anne and went for art materials. When I returned, Donnie was in tears. He'd missed the third problem. Mary looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a canister of pencils. "Look, Donnie," she said, kneeling beside him and gently lifting the tear-stained face from his arms. She placed the pencils on his desk. "See these pencils, Donnie?" she continued. "They belong to Mrs. Lindstrom and me. See how the erasers are worn? That's because we make mistakes too, lots of them. But we erase the mistakes and try again. That' what you must learn to do, too." She kissed him and stood up. "Here," she said, "I'll leave one pencil to you so you'll remember that everybody makes mistakes, even teachers." Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and just a glimmer of a smile. The pencil became Donnie's prize. That, together with Mary Anne's frequent encouragement and unfailing praise for even Donnie's small successes, gradually persuaded him that it's all right to make mistakes — s long as you erase them and try again.

The Price You Pay

The Creator sells us good things at the price of labor, effort, and persistence. We pay for our high ideals, sometimes, with great loneliness.

We pay for life itself through efforts to sustain it, and even more to train it into worthwhile channels and to keep it there. We pay for our sorrow and losses and errors sometimes with anger, sometimes with endurance1 and quiet, or best with tender and hopeful resignation.

But whatever coin we give we know at least that nothing may be had for nothing. duanwenw.com What do we most desire to buy? Are we able and willing to pay the price?

If we choose to buy pleasure, ease, and self-indulgence, somehow we must scrape together the purchase price. We may not eat our cake and have it too.

Haven’t you noticed what a high price those who drift through life, trusting to get the rewards of labor and avoid making payments, pay in the end?

On one occasion, a lady said to a famous violinist, duanwenw.com "I would give half my life to be able to play like you do." "That madam," he replied, "is exactly what I have given to do it."

The Power of the Dream

When someone looks into your eyes they should see something alive within you. Having a dream is like owning a lighthouse1 which directs you on your journey.

At every turn we come across its mystery. At each new level we become more of the person we were meant to become. In lonely times, when we pass through a storm of disappointment, we find our faith is unshaken, our strength still strong.

Believe in your faith. Set the vision before your eyes. Write down your most sincere dreams and when the duanwenw.com opportunity comes, step into your dream. It may take one season or more, but the result is the same. Make big dreams and then go out and make them realities. The highest hopes of the dreamer are revealed with every step taken in their journey to the impossible. For a season we must protect the dream so that it can grow quietly on the inside. But if we tenderly care for our deepest expectations, slowly but surely the dream will become new life.

Dreaming is an act of faith. The light of your expectations will cast off the shadows of a disbelieving world. God has given us the dreamer as a gift to light an unbelieving world.

Find your treasure within and cherish2 it. Tomorrow is waiting for you to take the first step.

All of us want to be good at our jobs, but how good do we really want to be? Good? Quite good? Very good? The best in our field? Or the best in the world?

Talent helps, but it won’t take you as far as ambition. Everybody wants to be good, duanwenw.com but few are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to be great. To many people, being nice in order to be liked is more important. There’s equal merit* in being nice and being liked, but you must not confuse them.

Most people are looking for a solution, a way to become good. There is no instant solution, duanwenw.com and the only way to learn is through experience and mistakes.

You can become whoever you want to be. You can achieve the unachievable, but first you need to aim beyond what you are capable of. You must close your eye to where your abilities end. Try to do the things that you’re incapable of.

If you think you’re unable to work for the best company, make that your aim.

If you think you’re incapable of running a company, make that your aim.

If you think you’re unable to be on the cover of Times magazine, make it your business to be there.

Make your vision of where you want to be a reality. Nothing is impossible.

Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,

  Old Times is still a-flying:

And this same flower that smiles to-day,

  To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious Lamp of Heaven, the Sun,

  The higher he's a-getting

The sooner will his race be run,

  And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,

  When youth and blood are warmer;

But being spend, the worse, and worst

  Times, still succeed the former.

  Then be not coy, but use your time;

And while ye may, go marry:

For having lost but once your prime,

  You may for ever tarry.

  on joy and sorrow

  by kahill gilbran

then a woman said, “speak to us of joy and sorrow.”

and he answered: your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

  and the selfsame well from

which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

and how else can it be?

the deeper that sorrow carves into your being.

the more joy you can contain.

is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup

that was burned in the potter’s oven?

and is not the lute that soothes your spirit,

the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

when you are joyous, look deep into your heart and

you shall find it is only that which has given

you sorrow that is giving you joy.

when you are sorrowful look again in your heart,

and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for

that which has been your delight.

some of you say, “nay, sorrow is the greater.”

but i say unto you, they are inseparable.

together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board,

remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

verily you are suspended like scales

between your sorrow and your joy.

only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.

when the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh

his gold and his silver, needs must your

joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

it's sad when people you know become people you knew。

when you can walk right past someone like they were never a big part of your life。

how you used to be able to talk for hours and how now, you can barely even look at them。

  it's sad how times change.

  Heaven and Hell---The Real Difference

A man spoke with the Lord about heaven and hell. The Lord said to the man, “Come, I will show you hell.” They entered a room where a group of people sat around a huge pot of stew. Everyone was famished, desperate and starving. Each held a spoon that reached the pot, but each spoon had a handle so much longer than their own arms that it could not be used to get the stew into their own mouths. The suffering was terrible.

  Sand and Stone

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, he wrote in the sand: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one, who had been slapped, got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

“Come, now I will show you heaven.” The Lord said after a while. They entered another room, identical to the first—the pot of stew, the group of people, the same long-handle spoons. But there everyone was happy and well-nourished.

“I don’t understand,” said the man. “Why are they happy here when they were miserable in the other room and everything was the same?” The Lord smiled. “Ah, it is simple,” he said. “Here they have learned to feed each other.”

  Life Is a Do-It-Yourself Project

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire.

he told his employer contractor of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family.

He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire.

  They could get by.

The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor.

The carpenter said yes,but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work.

He resorted to shooddy workmanship and used inferior materials.

It was an unfortunate way to end his career.

When the carpenter finished his work and the builder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front door key to the carpenter.

"This is your house,"he said,"my gift to you."

  What a shock!

  What a shame!

If he had only known he was building his own house,he would have done it all so differently.

Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

  So it is with us.

We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up less than the best.

At important points we do not give the job our best effort.

Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built.

If we had realized that we would have done it differently.
